About the Experience

Canyon Country — Palo Duro & Caprock Expedition

April 2–6, 2027 | Five Days, Four Nights, Two Texas State Parks

Explore a different side of Texas on a five-day camping expedition through Palo Duro Canyon and Caprock Canyons. Hike beneath towering red-rock formations, photograph wildlife, and spend your evenings beneath the Panhandle’s wide-open skies.

We’ll provide your tent-site camping, meals, cooking, nonalcoholic drinks, and drinking water. Between outings, return to our shared base camp for a meal, games, conversation, and time to relax. Bring your own camping equipment or reserve an optional gear rental package.

Our journey begins in Palo Duro Canyon, with a guided hike to the iconic Lighthouse formation as a centerpiece of the experience. Midway through the trip, we’ll relocate camp to Caprock Canyons for rugged landscapes, prairie dog viewing, and opportunities to photograph the free-roaming Texas State Bison Herd.

Our dates approach the April 6 new moon, offering a promising window for dark skies. When weather allows, we’ll gather after sunset to explore constellations and enjoy the stars.

Planned Itinerary

April 2 — Arrive in Palo Duro Canyon

Settle into camp, meet the group, and get acquainted with canyon country on an introductory walk or scenic overlook visit. Enjoy a meal together, sunset photography, and stargazing when skies allow.

April 3 — The Lighthouse Hike

Start early for our signature hike to the Lighthouse formation. Plan for approximately six miles of hiking, including the steep, uneven final ascent to the elevated viewing ledge when conditions allow. This route reaches the formation’s base and adjoining ledge; it does not include climbing the rock towers.

We’ll take breaks for photography and interpretation, followed by a quieter afternoon at camp and another evening beneath the stars.

April 4 — From Palo Duro to Caprock

Enjoy a relaxed morning before breaking camp and driving to Caprock Canyons. We’ll allow approximately two hours for the drive, plus time for packing, stops, and setting up our new camp.

An afternoon scenic drive or shorter walk will introduce the park before dinner and evening stargazing.

April 5 — Wildlife & Canyon Trails

Explore Caprock’s trails and overlooks, with time for wildlife observation and photography. Planned stops include Honey Flat Prairie Dog Town and opportunities to look for bison, birds, and other native wildlife.

We’ll focus on patient observation, respectful distances, and capturing the landscape in changing light.

April 6 — One Last Morning Outside

Enjoy a final morning wildlife walk or photography session before packing camp, saying goodbye, and departing.
